Video tutorial using painting and drawing to create an intuitive image

Painting with an old credit card

This short video shows a simple way of creating a background painting with craft acrylic paints and an old credit or gift card that you no longer need. I often use this technique to make backgrounds on all kinds of projects and to cover up the writing in old journals that I am upcycling into art journals. It can be done with one color, two colors or you can add acrylic matte medium if you want it to be translucent. Old credit/gift cards can also be handy for gluing collage or other things onto paper because you can quickly spread the glue or acrylic medium and then smooth out of the piece you are laying down.

Defining the Image

After making the background texture, I then begin to look at it using my imagination to find shapes and lines that look interesting to me. I may find a finished form in it that I just need to outline to bring out, or I may just find an interesting shape or line that I can use to create some symbol that feels meaningful to me at the time. Then I use various drawing media to to bring out the image and often a bit of a story emerges that I can follow. It is also important to note that abstract images can be just as powerful in evoking feelings to work with, so you don't have to try and find an image if you don't see or feel one.

Coloring the image

This is where I generally bring in the water soluble pastels or oil pastels etc, to color in the shapes and create dimension. Dark colors can add shadows or push areas into the background. Light colors can add highlights and bring objects to the foreground. Just play around and see what happens. It is just as important to feel the process of mark-making and coloring itself as it is to make a great image. That's what the craze about coloring books is, but you are using your own image rather than someone elses.
